Generation after generation lobbying for workers' rights! The Laborers' International Union of North America (LiUNA) - is the most progressive, aggressive and fastest growing union of construction workers, waste management workers, service and healthcare workers in Canada. Across the continent, we are over half a million strong. Although we run our own affairs in Canada, we are proud to be an important part of one of North America's oldest and most powerful unions. Our long tradition of cross-border cooperation continues to benefit members in both countries.
In Canada, LiUNA has over 100,000 proud members and retirees, united through collective bargaining agreements which help earn superior pay, better benefits, better pensions and more opportunities for better lives for our families.
LiUNA represents members across North America with a long history that originally started in 1836 when the first recognized Laborers' Union was established in Philadelphia. Hundreds of Laborers' Local Unions existed across North America at the turn of the century but they were only admitted to the early AFL as "Federal Locals." But in 1903, Samuel Gompers, President of the American Federation of Labor (AFL), sent out a convention call to independent local Laborers’ Unions, urging them to join together and establish an international union of construction laborers.
LiUNA members have access to free education through their respective Local's training courses. Our members have access to dozens of courses that open the door to new opportunities and provide members with valuable skills. Classes are available in every Province and throughout every State in the United States.
LiUNA members earn industry standard wages. With the security of collective bargaining as a unit, our members earn wages you can support a family with.
LiUNA members are safer on the job. Members are empowered with the ability to speak out about workplace hazards. LiUNA actively lobbies for workplace safety to ensure that employers are not exploiting or putting workers at risk.
LiUNA is involved with local communities across North America. In Canada alone, we have proudly support thousands of charities and events that are important to our membership and the communities they are part of.
Through solidarity our members founded our Union and with continued determination our members continue to make our Union strong. Our members run LiUNA, through electing officers at all levels and through participating actively in the affairs of their Local Unions throughout North America.
As workers and as representatives of LiUNA, our united goal is to make lives better for working people.
Effective May 1, 2023, LIUNA is led by General President Brent Booker, General Secretary-Treasurer Michael F. Sabitoni and the General Executive Board.
