OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE

We are the men and women who do the hard, dangerous and sometimes dirty work of building and servicing communities throughout North America. LIUNA members are at the forefront of the construction, service and energy industries. United through collective bargaining our members earn family-supporting pay, good benefits, with the opportunity for advancement.

Members of LiUNA are experienced Construction Craft Labourers that rely on a diverse set of skills, performed on a wide variety of job sites. LiUNA members build roads, bridges, tunnels, transit and energy systems as well as work on demolition and renovation projects. Members assist in the construction and maintenance of power plants and substations, dig trenches for lines, and repair roads after line installation, and build supporting infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines. Members are skilled in construction (industrial, commercial and institutional), roadway construction, pipelaying, utilities, tunneling, drilling and blasting, slope stabilization, demolition and shoring, mine development, dock and shipyard, site preparation, erosion control, hoisting and rigging, OSHA safety, permit-required confined space, rough terrain forklift operation, trenching and excavation safety, erecting turbines, and solar panel installation.

LIUNA is also one of the most diverse and effective unions. We not only provide representation in the construction sector, we also assist our members working in healthcare, manufacturing and production and service sectors.

Join as a Skilled Labourer

Construction labourers perform a wide range of physically demanding tasks involving building and highway construction, tunnel and shaft excavation, hazardous waste removal, environmental remediation, and demolition.

As construction work becomes more dependent on the use of complex equipment and machinery and a broader selection of materials and techniques, the construction craft labourer is increasingly expected to have enhanced competencies in using, managing, and understanding resources, information, and technology. They also need to have basic communication, comprehension, and interpersonal skills. They are one of the first crafts on the job and the last craft to leave the job.

About 90% of apprenticeship training is provided by employers in the workplace. The remainder involves classroom instruction and theory, which is provided at each Local’s Training Centre. Apprentices from LIUNA training are considered by employers to be among the most productive, conscientious, qualified and safety-oriented individuals in the industry. Whether it’s in the workplace or in the classroom, the skills apprentices gain lead to challenging, rewarding and profitable jobs in an industry that provides tremendous opportunities. Providing hands-on training for people who enjoy learning by doing.

LiUNA apprentices:

  • Are paid while gaining work experience
  • Receive wage increases as level of skill increases
